How to meaningfully end 2018
Now that we are coming closely to the end of the year, many of us will feel bittersweet about the year behind us. Reflecting on the year can help us remember the good and the bad throughout the year which can prepare for the new fresh 2019. However, for us to feel fresh for the new start on 1st of January we need to look back on 2018 and let go off everything that will not serve us good in 2019. Here are a few tips of what can you do to prepare for the bright year ahead of us.
1. Learn from the past year
“Isn’t it funny how day by day nothing changes, but when you look back everything is different.” - (C.S. Lewis)
Before we start the year ahead, we need to look back on what happened over the last year. Go ahead and look at what were your resolutions for 2018 and how many have you achieved? How many things have you achieved that were not your new years resolutions? You might be pleasantly or negatively surprised with both answers but both are equally important. If you find that you did not achieve how much you hopped for then re-think what went wrong? What can you change this year in order to achieve those goals? Do you need help from someone close to you? Whatever you find that would be helpful, is a step forward and being better prepared for 2019 than you were for the previous year. Use knowledge and skills you gain in 2018 in order to create the best version of yourself in the upcoming year.
2. Remember the good from the previous year
Often when we are remembering of our own work, we can become our own biggest critics and remember mostly the bad. When you’re reflecting on your year, remember that during the year you had 365 days and were likely to have accomplished daily achievements which you should be proud of. Try writing down ten to 15 things that you have done this year that made you feel good and proud of yourself. Remember those feelings and then start the year with them.
3. Unclutter your life
In order to end this year meaningfully we need to leave some things in the past and start over fresh. By uncluttering your life, you can start with cancelling all those memberships that you don’t use and save yourself money. You can also unclutter your home of the items you do not wear anymore and
donate them. Lastly the most difficult thing is letting go off relationships that did not serve you well in the past year and had brought you only bad memories. If all this caused you unhappiness, leave it in the old year instead of taking it with you.
4. Thank people that were there for you in 2018
When you were reflecting on your year, think of the people that helped you throughout this year by being there for you and showing support when you needed. Giving small thanks and being grateful can bring more positive emotions and reducing a negative mindset patterns in our life. Knowing that you are starting a fresh start with people around you that you trust and care about can increase your motivation and happiness levels.
Lastly do not forget to celebrate everything that you have achieved this year whether it was small or big. Remember the good and bad from it because each moment was important at the time and has prepared you for the year ahead. I hope you have a great year ahead and we wish you a Happy New Year from Bright Minds!
